ramen: it's what's for dinner

you know, as an asian-american (chinese-american, if you want to be specific), i find it insulting that ramen is considered cheap, sub-standard meal. hello, us yellow folk have been living on the stuff for centuries, and look at us thriving with our population, electronic equipment and sneaker manufacturing! just because the stuff is available at four for a dollar does not mean it's bad! it's full of sodi-yum and if you throw some vegetables, tofu or egg in there, you've got a whole meal in a bowl.

sure, the true ramen afficionados know that to make the perfect ramen, you've got to use less water than as directed, especially if you're making the korean version, shin ramyun. you want to use just enough water to be able to boil the noodles but still create a thick and spicy sauce. not hot enough for you? toss in fifteen splashes of hot sauce. i guarantee you'll be shitting fire within an hour.

if you want to get fancy, you can cube firm tofu, or throw in some mixed vegetables or spinach, or those oily little taste treats that are "fish balls" (available frozen at any asian market). my personal favourite is to crack an egg into the mixture about ten seconds after i drop the noodle block in - you should cook the egg long enough so that the yolk solidifies. any less than that and you may wreak havoc with your intestinal system, but i'm personally willing to chance it for runny egg yolk. i'm also the girl who enjoys soft-boiled eggs, so go figure.

ramen has gotten a bad rap amongst college kids and the indigent. i'm here to stand up, loud and proud and say, "i'll pay a dollar for a package of ramen! it's just that good!"

oh yeah, i always throw an egg & hot sauce in there. yum!

you, my dear, know the way to my heart: through my stomach!!!

My boyfriend's "cure" when he's starting to feel like he's coming down with something is ramen and cubed tofu. He SWEARS by it!

I love ramen but have stayed away because of the intense sodium but now that I'm thinking of it as sodi-yum, I'm tempted again!

ooh! if you guys can get toasted nori sheets (seaweed), that's also nice to toss in at the end (or else they get too soggy). sodi-yum all the way!!!
p.s. drink ten glasses of water afterwards. or a beer.

mmmm, I never thought of adding nori! AWESOME.

four for a dollar? try 6.

yeah, i just ate a big bowl of spicy beef flavor.

hmm i don't think i had spicy beef. today i had "oriental" just because i could. bf made himself "chicken" but he overcooked his noodles. i like mine al dente. mmm. and don't forget the hot sauce! it's mandatory!

you're talking to a girl who eats a slice of pizza AND fries for lunch. fat is not a bad word. too many calories is what does you in. take it from me: i'm still eating like a beast and i've lost almost 40lbs. portion control! and no mafongo if possible...

I boil it, discard the water and toss carrots, broccoli, and top it with a dash of sesame oil, soy and fish sauce.

I save the flavour pack for bread crumbs.

Or the Irish Asian treat, which I termed The Western Rail- creamed chip beef on ramen. may sound gross... but I tell you now it IS amazing.

isn't creamed chipped beef known as "shit on a shingle?" i can't put that on ramen. however your sesame oil/soy/fish sauce combo sounds good.

best with sri lacha (sp?) hot chili sauce!

some diced up scallions go a long way too.

i will have it every once in a while even though the noodles are fried!

i like it with
scallions, broccoli, fish sauce, red rooster sauce, sauteed veggie steak strips! and i will cook two packs of noodles and use 1 packet of seasoning. always oriental flavor!

you fancy pants! the fish sauce is very viet/thai of you!

i have heard of people who drain the noodles and then add TOMATO SAUCE. what an atrocity.

well, miss.. we'll have to have a ramen party because i'm your neighbor again. i got an apartment on metropolitan near leonard so i shall return to the hood shortly.

a ramen & vodka party! i guess i really will have to clean the bathroom now. it's a disaster. but i got cute kittens!

I love ramen, but up here, they sell slightly more expensive "yakisobi" noodles that are refrigerated and DELICOUS with some vegetables and soy sauce. I think they're $.89, but I love them, and think they are gourmet cuisine.

As a matter of fact, I will purchase some tomorrow and feed them to my boyfriend one night soon.

:)
